No, and here’s my thinking on it. For the most part, these “pro” game players will have careers that may last as long as the one game they are good at playing is popular. Some times the skills cross over. How many pro gamers are equally good at several games … or equally good at different types of games? And how long can they keep that playing edge that makes it possible for them to earn a living at it? Thresh is an example. He was, maybe even still is, the best Quake player out there. Yet, when Quake 2 came along, he was no longer the best and by the time we rolled out Quake 3 Arena, you didn’t even hear his name involved in professional play. Now compare that to folks involved in the mod community. If a mod maker (artist, programmer, level designer, sound tech, etc.) has the drive to make quality game material as a hobby, he or she is likely to have the same drive towards doing it professionally. Like pro sports, only the best will get into the biz, and only the best of the best will really be successful. But there are many more opportunities for people to succeed as creative professionals than there are for people to succeed as professional players. And, unlike professional playing, the creative’s talents can usually cross between game engines quite smoothly. In the end, I think the talented mapper, skinner and mod maker has far more opportunities for growth and success in a career than a professional player.
