Many of you have been wondering about our plans for the next Age of Utopia. While nothing has been set in stone yet, here are some of our basic plans:
(1) First off, contrary to posts in this forum, we see this age as one of our most succesful yet. We have more players than ever, each spending more time and visiting more pages. Individually, these measures can mean different things (more multis, slower servers, etc), but combined, they mean that more people are playing, and more people are getting involved. This is, unfortunately, confirmed by the continuing slow slowers. Granted, this round may not be as popular with forum users, but overall, the objective evidence shows the trend has been positive.
(2) Based on the above, there won’t be many significant changes this round. There’ll be the usual tweaks and formula adjustments, but we don’t anticipate many major additions or anything of that sort — we will instead focus mostly on balancing.
(3) We hope to end the round by April 15th at the latest. The exact time hasn’t been determined, but we’re going to be completing many of our current projects soon, with the Oscar Contest and NCAA Tournament ending and Fantasy Baseball starting in the next 10 days.
(4) In terms of a reshuffle, we’re currently leaning against it, given the possibilities described in #5. The reason for avoiding a reshuffle is simple. There are two primary types of players in Utopia — “social” players who enjoy the social interaction with the game, and “competitive” players who are more interested in doing well. The former will spend more time roleplaying and just talking in the forums. The latter tend to focus their communications on war and spend more time looking for targets.
We feel the game is far more enjoyable for everyone if there is a larger portion of “social” players involved because they create the atmosphere that makes Utopia unique. When the focus becomes primarily competitive, then the games loses enjoyment for lots of people, simply because not everyone can do well — every attack win comes with an attack loss. A Reshuffle tends to help make the game more competitive and fair. The cost is that some players quit — we have no problem with that, except that the players who quit are primarily from the “social” group. *That* is a problem as it affects the overall quality of the game. As such…
(5) We’re currently looking to acquire another server for Utopia. There’s still a big *IF* here, but if we can obtain one, we’re planning to create a 3rd “secure” game of Utopia. While it would not be ironclad, it would place more restrictions on play to help reduce multis and traders — one player per computer, one computer per player, etc.
Players would be able to maintain two Utopia accounts — one on the WoU/Battlefields combination (same as it is now) as well as one on the new server. This would essentially create a reshuffled server with better cheat-protection for those that want a fresh start.
We’re still working on the possibilities here, but our target date is to launch this game at the same time as, or shortly after, the main reset.
More details will be posted as available.
Enjoy the game,
Mehul Patel
