Cliffe fra Counter-Strike teamet havde fornyligt muligheden for at prøve den nye Half-Life netkode tværs over USA. Hans dom: “Believe the hype”.
Valve har gennem pressemeddelelser og interviews gjort et temmelig stort nummer ud af deres research inden for lag-reducerende teknologier, der kan bruges sammen med onlinespil, og selvfølgelig specielt Half-Life og det kommende Team Fortress 2.
Med udgivelsen af den kommende Half-Life patch (der kommer til at gå under navnet Team Fortress 1.5), vil offentligheden for første gang komme til at se frugten af Valves arbejde. Cliffe fra Counter-Strike teamet er en af de få personer, der allerede har prøvet den nye netkode under forhold, hvor man rent faktisk kan bedømme hvorvidt den er noget værd.
Sniping uden problemer med ping 200
Ifølge ham, så er forskellen som nat og dag. Cliife, der selv kommer fra den amerikanske østkyst, prøvede at spille både CS uden den nye netkode og TF med den nye netkode på en server på vestkysten (hvor Valve holder til). Hans ping var begge gange 200 eller højere, men oplevelsen var vidt forskellig. Cliffe hævder blandt andet, at selv med ping 200 var det muligt at snipe uden større problemer, og at hans ping generelt gik ned 30 til 40 point (selvom forskellen i oplevelsen var endnu større).

Hey guys, I wanted to tell you about my experiences with he new HL netcode (since a lot of people are wondering about it). First off, let me just say: believe the hype.
More specifically, I’m on the East coast and Valve’s server is on the West coast. We were testing some CS (without the new netcode) one night and the next day we tested the new TFC 1.5 patch. This allowed me to see the difference first hand. The results were incredible. With the CS game, it was totally laggy, delayed, choppy, and generally unplayable. The next day with the new netcode, the difference was night and day. The delay was virtually gone, and the movement was silky smooth. And this was on a server across the United States! Finally HL netcode is on par with Q3 and UT. In addition, the new VGUI is very cool. It makes issuing commands (or anything else) much easier.
My ping dropped around 30 or 40 points. Though my ping was around 200, it felt as if it was a 90 ping. That was incredible. This will mean that even higher near 300 pings will feel extremely smooth. Now this isn’t to say that every net connection will now feel like a LAN. But lag now manifests itself in different ways. The delay isn’t on your mouse click > gun shot, instead there’s a slight delay with your shot registering / hitting your opponent. This works out much better. With a towering ping, I was still successfully sniping (which would be unheard of with the current netcode).
Yahn and company have really done good work. So be on the lookout for the patch from Valve, it’s really going to rock arse (especially for those on slower connections). We’ll have the patch right here @ hlcentral as soon as it hits.
