Crytek har i længere tid været under pres. Gentagende rapporter om manglende lønudbetalinger har floreret de seneste måneder og i går kunne Crytek så helt officielt fortælle, at de lukker fem spilstudier og fokuserer yderligere på deres CryEngine.
Fremover vil deres afdelinger i Frankfurt og Kiev holde skansen, men det betyder lukninger af stort set alle andre Crytek-afdelinger. Crytek Istanbul vil dog ikke blive påvirket. Crytek vil fremover fokusere på “premium IP’er”. Warframe, som er i hænderne på Crytek Kiev, vil formodentlig ikke blive påvirket af restruktureringerne.
Crytek restrukturerede også deres forretning i 2014 og det har tilsyneladende ikke helt været nok. Overfor Polygon fortæller Star Citizen-udviklerne Roberts Space Industries, at de ikke vil blive påvirket af de nye vinde fra Crytek. Star Citizen benytter en modificeret udgave af CryEngine.
Det er ganske tydeligt at Crytek har ekspanderet lidt for ambitiøst og optimistisk. Med ganske få IP’er og kontorer i Budapest, Sofia, Seoul, Shanghai og Istanbul, kommer gårsdagens udmelding ikke som den store overraskelse. Du kan læse mere på bl.a. GI.biz og Polygon.
Frankfurt am Main (Germany) December 20, 2016 – Crytek today outlined a series of changes to its future business plans that will see the company refocus on its core strengths of developing innovative games and game-development technology.
As part of the changes, Crytek will concentrate on development in its Frankfurt and Kiev studios and continue to develop and work on premium IPs. CRYENGINE will remain a core pillar of Crytek’s overall strategy, with enterprise licensees and indie developers alike continuing to be served by regular engine updates. All other development studios will not remain within Crytek and management has put plans into action to secure jobs and to ensure a smooth transition and stable future.

De har en fin engine, men måske skulle de sørge lidt for god gameplay i stedet for intetsigende spil.
