Shades Guide:
I’m writing this mostly in response to the lack of informed
players I’ve seen. This is essentially to help you guys to stop
dying so easily, and to give you some generally helpful
information. So if you’re new, or if you just wanna check if you
missed anything, here’s some tips.
- HUNT! Hunt, hunt, hunt. I can not stress this enough. Early game, build your choice of hero, grab 3-5 low level units, and take them out hunting. You want to level your hero up as much as possible. Just remember to keep your hero safe, don’t let it die. Also the units with it are pointless, only heroes gain experience
- Cities. Relating to above, this isn’t simcity. Cities don’t matter as much as other games. Don’t sit around in your town building lines of towers and defenses and buildings. Instead use 1, go hunt.
- Upkeep. How you want to manage upkeep is your choice, but don’t forget that you lose a lot of money by instantly jumping into low and high upkeeps. Usually it’s best to stay in low upkeep (30 food and below) and hunt, then leap into high upkeep right before you attack your enemies.
- Town portals. These things are very important for team games (Less, but still important for 1on1 games as well). With these your hero and units around them can teleport to any friendly town hall. This will let you save your allies, your expansions, and any other such friendly town halls, or combine right before an attack. Simply right click the town portal scroll in your heroes inventory, then left click on a town hall.
- Unit control. Keep your units well controled. Heroes stay back, tanks stay in front, ranged middle. Do all you can to not let your hero die, but don’t stop firing off those spells. They win battles more than numbers do.
- Expand. Like any RTS, you’ll want to expand whenever possible. So take those nearby expansions. Conversely, don’t let your enemy expand. Keep an eye on his nearby expansions. Read the war3 FAQ, the game readme, and the blizzard strategy guide. They’ll help you not to get beaten down like the newbies you are. Have fun out there.
